More about some of these special collaborations—
Chu Xi Candle
Abacus Row x Studio Stockhome
'In collaboration with Studio Stockhome, we’ve produced a limited and exclusive candle to offer you this Lunar New Year. This candle poured in a striking vermillion glass vessel is named Chu Xi 除夕, a reference to the traditions and stories of New Year’s Eve.
Chu Xi is the word used to specifically refer to Lunar New Year’s Eve. The phrase also literally translates to eliminating Xi, the new year’s monster that once terrorized Chinese villages until one villager learned that the monster could be deterred by the color red and loud noises. Hence the lighting of firecrackers and the pasting of red signs over one’s home leading up to the new year.
With notes of burnt firecracker paper, smoke, incense, charcoal, cedarwood, and oak bark, Chu Xi is an evocative fragrance that fills the air with joy, protection and auspicious wishes for the coming year.
Water Rabbits & Maneki Nekos
Alyson Iwamoto exclusively for Abacus Row
At Abacus Row it is both the Year of the Rabbit and the Year of the Cat. We worked with LA-based ceramic artist Alyson Iwamoto to produce a set of stoneware water rabbits and maneki nekos (lucky cats) in honor of both. Alyson's work is deeply influence by her Japanese heritage and her LA roots.
We have a range of one-of-a-kind charms and sculptural pieces available in-store and online. Each rabbit and maneki neko is hand painted and made with love. Along the backside of this piece is a slot that can be used to display polaroids, notes, or cards. Each piece is handmade and unique.
Red Hong Bao Set
Hataguchi Collective exclusively for Abacus Row
An exclusive collaboration with our friend Hiroko Kato of Hataguchi Collective for our Lunar New Year shop. Use the envelopes to carry on the tradition of wishing good luck by distributing red pockets filled with money, and enclose with those bills a special wish or message on the notecard.
This is a set of 5 envelopes with matching notecards. Each piece is crafted in India from beautifully screen printed cotton pulp paper upcycled from cotton waste produced by garment manufacturers.
Sheng Pu'er Teacake
Teaphile exclusively for Abacus Row
We worked with Teaphile to offer a special 2014 ancient tree xigui sheng pu’er 古樹昔歸生普洱 200g tea cake that will make a lovely gift for friends and family or a beautiful tea to serve to guests.
This aged sheng pu'er from Lincang Prefecture in Yunnan, China is made with ancient tree material and the processing is highly limited every year. The name of the village, Xigui, loosely translates to “returning to the past”. The high minerality and complex notes have earned Xigui the reputation of one of the top-tier sheng pu'er. A perfect balance of bitter grassy notes and a silky texture, what you get is a tea with strong cha qi without any astringency. The floral profile reveals itself with multiple infusions.
