In both Vietnamese and Chinese cultures, the Kitchen God plays an important role in the family. On the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, the Kitchen God returns to Heaven to provide the Jade Emperor (the King of Heaven) with a report on the activities of every household. It is believed this report determines whether the Jade Emperor rewards or punishes a family.

The Kitchen God not only watches over the family but is regarded as a member of the family, serving as the emissary between heaven and earth.
